Serge Najjar est un orfèvre de la ville, nous dévoilant ses multiples potentiels géométriques. L’ œil photographique de l'artiste se focalise sur le rapport aux matières et à toute l’histoire de l’art moderne et de l’abstraction géométrique. Car pour instinctif qu’il soit, son regard nous permet de revisiter notre monde contemporain à l’échelle des hommes qui apparaissent et humanisent les architectures utopiques ou écrasantes. Aussi ses images interrogent-elles les relations entre peinture et photographie.
Serge Najjar proceeds like a goldsmith of cities as he shows their manifold geometric potential. He casts his photographer’s eye on our interaction with materials and their correlation with the history of modern art and geometric abstraction. His approach may be instinctive, but his views allow us to reconsider our contemporary surroundings on a human scale. People’s presence makes utopian, at times overwhelming architectural structures appear more human. Najjar’s work thus examines the interrelationship between painting and photography.
“Quand j’ai commencé à photographier et capturer la vraie vie autour de moi, tous les livres d’art que j’avais lus pendant mon enfance prenaient du sens :
Du cubisme et de l’art abstrait à l’avant-garde et au constructivisme russe ... Chaque image déterminait ma façon de voir les choses autour de moi quand j’ai été mis face au défi de créer.
Quand vous regardez les choses avec un nouvel œil, vous revivez. Vous réalisez à quel point vous pouvez devenir puissant en poussant les autres à voir ce qu’ils ne peuvent pas voir par eux-mêmes.
Vous finissez par réaliser qu’il n’y a pas de lieu idéal pour photographier, ou une ville idéale. L’architecture peut, bien sûr, être une source d’inspiration, mais ce qui rend les choses plus intéressantes, c’est de s’interroger sur les contextes, l’esthétique et notre capacité à redéfinir ce que nous pensons savoir déjà.
La photographie m’a aidé à explorer la mince frontière entre le laid et le beau, l’ordinaire et le moins ordinaire, entre le chaos et l’ordre, la réalité et la vérité. ”
“When I started taking photos to capture real life around me, all the art books I had read during my childhood gained significance, from Cubism and abstraction to the French avant-garde and Russian Constructivism. Every image had an influence on how I saw things around me as I dealt with the challenge of creating.
You feel alive again when you take a fresh look. It’s powerful when you come to realize that you can get others to apprehend what they cannot see on their own.
You end up realizing that there is no ideal location for taking photographs, no such thing as the perfect city. Architecture can of course be a source of inspiration, but what makes subjects truly interesting is contemplating settings and aesthetics, and making use of our ability to reconsider what we think we already know.
Photography has helped me explore the fine line between the ugly and the beautiful, the ordinary and the less ordinary, between chaos and order, reality and truth.”

Photographe libanais, Serge Najjar est né à Beyrouth, Liban en 1973.
Il est Docteur en Droit, Diplômé de l’Université Panthéon-Assas à Paris.
Il est photographe autodidacte.

He is a Doctor in Law, graduated from the University Panthéon-Assas in Paris.
He is a self-taught photographer.
